WCCO Top Gun Weather

by on May.19, 2012, under Minneapolis Weather Wcco

As a TV director, sometimes we can sneak in something fun. This time the weather guy (Chris Shaffer) and I conspired to get some footage from one of our favorite movies on the air – Top Gun. This is from WCCO’s August 11 2011 newscast, Minneapolis/St. Paul DMA. Liz Collin is the female anchor, Mike Max on sports.
Video Rating: 5 / 5

When WCCO stopped signing off the air early in the morning in the late 1970s, they replaced the lack of signal with this computer graphic/text “news” report that aired in a continued loop for hours until the broadcast day re-started. This originally aired after “This Must be the Place” in June 1979.

AQUI & AJAZZ, Bobby Lyle

Bobby Lyle is a jazz, soul jazz, and smooth jazz pianist. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee but grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota in a home near the corner of Park Avenue and 32nd Street. His father, reportedly, was a sports writer for the Star Tribune newspaper. He had his first gig at 16 and played in the 1960s with Gene and Jerry Hubbard in the Bobby Lyle Trio. They were very popular at the Blue Note on Plymouth Avenue on Minneapolis’ North Side, and at the Ebony Lounge on University Avenue in St. Paul. When Ramsey Lewis left the Trio which he started and made famous, Lyle became the keyboard player for Young Holt Unlimited. In 1970, he had a meeting and subsequent jam session with Jimi Hendrix who was planning on starting a jazz-rock group with Lyle and fellow Minnesotans Willie Weeks and Bill Lordan as the rhythm section before his death later that year. He moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and soon went on the road with Sly and the Family Stone. During this time he also had a stint with the Ronnie Laws band. This led to a meeting with Wayne Henderson of the Jazz Crusaders who then took him to Capitol Records for his first solo recording deal in 1977. After three albums (“The Genie”, “New Warrior”, and “Night Fire”), Capitol abandoned their jazz division. Without a record deal, Lyle returned to his sideman work in 1981 with George Benson. In that same year he was a guest artist on the Yellowjackets debut LP. Extensive tours with Bette Midler, Al Jarreau, and Anita Baker

Former Governor Arne Carlson on the Budget Impasse, and the problems inside the Republican Party. “If you look today at the Minnesota stalemate that has occurred–the two most important people in that contest are the governor of the state of Minnesota Mark Dayton and Tony Sutton. And the big difference is, we the people elected one of those.”–Arne Carlson. On May 27th in Minneapolis City Hall, hundreds met to celebrate the birthday centennial of Hubert Humphrey. Arguably one of the most effective legislators of our time. Authoring many bills, and producing them with the help Senators on the other side of the isle. Famous relationships developed between Humphrey and Republicans Everett Dirkson, Barry Goldwater and others. Humphrey, is also credited with breaking the longest running filibuster in Senate history. How did he do this? How did he perfect the “art of the compromise?” Minnesota, can look to Humphrey for solutions to today’s problems, and that includes the current budget impasse. Former Governor Arne Carlson spoke strongly against the “no-compromise” strategy of the current Republican Party and its Chairman Tony Sutton here at the Humphrey Centennial, here are 3 clips assembled from an afternoon panel on “Civility in 21st Century Politics” that he sat on along with Hubert (Skip) Humphrey III, former Vice President Walter Mondale, and moderated by Federal Judge John R. Blizzard warnings on the East Coast extended from New York to the Carolinas on Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service said. www.hitcreatormusic.ning.com Areas under the warning include the Washington metro area; Baltimore, Maryland; Newark and Atlantic City, New Jersey; Dover, Delaware; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York City and Long Island, New York. A blizzard warning was in effect as far south as Ashville, North Carolina, the service said. Under such a warning, the following conditions are expected to be seen for three hours or longer wind speeds of 35 mph or more and considerable falling and/or blowing of snow with visibility near zero (less than ¼ mile), the weather service said. In Washington, the snow was falling at a rate of 2 inches per hour, said CNN meteorologist Jacqui Jeras. The snowfall is affecting people farther north than last weekend’s storm, Jeras said. And other states are sharing the travails of bad weather: Jeras said the weather service reports that 47 states have snow on the ground. The winter storm barreled in from the Midwest, where it kept cars off streets and planes off runways in cities such as Chicago, Illinois, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The snow swept eastward, moving into Washington on Tuesday night and swooping toward New York. From mud to superhighway, Prairie Public’s local production The Old Red Trail is an historical retrospective of the road we now know as Interstate 94. It has been called many things. The Red Trail, the Red Line Trail, the National Parks Highway, North Dakota Highway 3, US Highway 10, the Theodore Roosevelt Badlands Trail, Interstate 94 – a succession of names across almost a century, all describing an automobile transportation route extending well beyond the boundaries of North Dakota. From east to west it stretches over the state’s southern half, through the Red River Valley, up escarpments, across plains formed by glaciers, over the nation’s longest river, across rolling plains through the rugged Badlands. From its humble beginnings as a dirt trail to today’s incarnation as Interstate Highway 94, it forms the major east/west route for auto travel across the state.
